Lose Weight by Healing Your Fears With Positive Affirmations

I haven’t been watching The Biggest Loser faithfully this season, however I did catch most of it last night. What really caught my attention was the very end of the show when Jez was voted off. He said (this isn’t word for word) that he had been living his life consumed with or ruled by fear up to that point. In his update they showed that he had gained the confidence to move to California, which I am assuming must have been something he was afraid to do before.

The point that I am focusing on is Jez’s admission that he had been living a life ruled by fear. Can you relate to this, and do you use food as a way to salve those fears? Perhaps you even keep yourself overweight because of fear, fear of being treated differently if you are trim, thin, and fit.

I can also relate to eating out of fear, especially feeling afraid of making the wrong decision, therefore eating to procrastinate on making that decision! If this is also the case for you, you can love yourself out of this and lose weight in the process. Some affirmations that I find especially helpful are, “Out of this situation only good will come. Everything is working out for my highest good. I am safe, all is well.” These are foundational, positive affirmations that I learned from Louise L. Hay. You’ll notice that they don’t reference your weight, so you might be asking, “How can these affirmations help me lose weight”?

It’s just like many of the other exercises so far in the 31 Days of Loving Yourself Thin series. If you take away the reason that you are overeating (in this case, fear) and love yourself through it, you will also eliminate or greatly minimize your overeating. If the reason you turn to food is healed, then you won’t have the need to abuse food anymore and overeat! ;)

For today’s exercise, write the above affirmations 10 times in your notebook or journal. You can also do the exercise for Day 9 again if fear is a large motivator for your overeating. Be sure to note any feedback you get from yourself in the form of negative, limiting thoughts. Those are thoughts that you will want to turn in to positive affirmations to clean them out of your consciousness.

If you aren’t familiar with the Loving Yourself Thin exercises be sure to read the introduction to them. You can also refer to Day 14, which is a review day.

JoLynn - I couldn’t agree with you more re. your statement “If the reason you turn to food is healed, then you won’t have the need to abuse food anymore and overeat!” Eating disorders and disorder eating patterns are not about food - they’re about trying to ignore npleasant emotions like fear, shame, anger, etc. It’s just much easier to focus on calorie counting or the stairclimber than to go to therapy or really self-reflect and face these negative thoughts. I applaud your efforts here - looking forward to reading more!

    Hi JoLynn,

Really great article. On the topic of fear, the reason I didn’t start on my path to weight loss was because I was afraid to fail(again). I couldn’t fail if I never started.

But the thing that helped me was looking at my past successes and gaining confidence from that.

I guess I healed my fear and didn’t need or want to stay fat anymore.

I subscribed to your RSS feed as well.

    Hi Steve,

    Thanks! :)

I really think that a lot of us get stuck in fear and it holds us back from moving forward. It makes sense to me, your being afraid to fail again and and that being why you didn’t want to move forward. It’s great that you did break free from that thought and focused on what you had accomplished in the past, WTG Steve!
