How To Stop Eating and Love Yourself

Do you have the belief that you can’t stop eating? Have you ever had the thought that there is just not enough food that could ever fill you up inside?

It’s Day 22 in the 31 Days of Loving Yourself Thin series and today’s exercise is all about the belief “I can’t stop eating“, the belief that no matter what you do, you’ll never be able to control your eating, you’ll forever be an overeater. This isn’t about stopping yourself from eating even when you’re hungry because you think that that is the way to lose weight.

So what does the thought “I can’t stop eating” have to do with loving yourself? Well, if you equate food with love and comfort and you are an overeater, you are essentially attempting to feel loved and comforted by using food. What if you already felt loved and comforted in your life, and going a step further, who is the most important and most immediate source of that love and comfort?

You are the most important and immediate source of love and comfort for you. ;) While you cannot discount the miracles that can occur in your life with prayer, what we are focusing on in these 31 Days of Loving Yourself Thin is the healing that you can work in your life by loving your self more each day.

For today’s exercise, go to the mirror, look yourself deep in the eyes, and repeat the following affirmation 10 times: “I love you just as you are regardless of how much you weigh. Love surrounds you and protects you and nourishes you.” Then, in your journal, write the same affirmation 10 times, while changing the pronouns: “I love myself just as I am regardless of how much I weigh. Love surrounds me and protects me and nourishes me.”

This affirmation is targeted towards the belief, “I can’t stop eating”. The more you fill yourself with love and affirm that love surrounds you and nourishes you, then you will have less of a need to overeat. You already know that no amount of food will ever be enough to fill you up, but if you replace that void with love and acceptance for yourself, you will have less and less of a void to fill.

You can find a complete list of current exercises in this series in the introductory post, which is a must read if this is your first experience with these exercises. In addition to that post, Day 14 also gives a good review of the foundation and focus of these exercises.

    Hi Zac,

You’re right, you can really get caught in a negative cycle of eating because you feel bad and then eating more because you feel bad from overeating. It is possible though, to love yourself, forgive yourself for the overeating, and break out of the cycle.
